You need to watch out for a lottery scam which comes in the form of a SMS from Punjab Lottery Scheme. It says you have won 1 crore and asks you to pay a processing fee. Even if you pay (which you most definitely should not), they will ask for more money and never pay you anything. So do watch out for such messages. If it is too good to be true, it probably is not. If you have never participated in a 'Punjab Lottery Scheme' there is no chance that you are going to win it. If it is asking for a processing fee, it is a scam.

We Indians trust strangers very easily. Criminals take full advantage of this.

Agreed! Are there any best practices around this? What not to do? What to watch out for? Will be helpful.

Yes, I have been trying to keep up with the forum since I joined. It is very helpful. Thanks. On this specific scam I have heard one similar story but it was a Mumbai name.

There has to be a strong police action, if we want to make a point to the criminals.

Aakash, the police and the government will do their part, but ultimately it is we who will have to stop these scams from happening. Criminals will find new ways. So we have to be smart.
