E-commerce major Flipkart has lodged a complaint that a spoofed email account, resembling the email account of its CEO Binny Bansal, was used by cyber-criminals to send two emails to the company’s CFO requesting for a transfer of $80,000. Luckily, the emails were detected as fake before any damage could be done.
Email spoofing refers to the forgery of the email header so that the email address appears to have originated from someone or somewhere other than the actual source. So, even if the email address appears as ramesh@yourcompany.com the actual email address is something else.
Have you seen or faced a case of spoofed email in your personal life or at office? What did you do?
