Last week Whatsapp announced that it is now offering end to encryption. It means that all the messages (chats/audio/pictures/video) you send is scrambled in such a way that it can only be understood by the system of your recipient computer. This feature means that there is a very little probability that the messages you send to someone can be intercepted meaningfully by data thieves or other parties. Of course you and the other party need to have the latest Whatsapp version if you want encryption to be enabled. I think it is a great move towards privacy. What is your opinion? It is indeed a great move! In Whatsapp groups it only works when all group members have the latest version.

Sounds great but what is encryption anyways?

It means converting text into a secret code, so that only the sender and the receiver can understand it. For example if each letter of sahil is moved by 2 alphabets it would become ucjkn. If you tell the receiver secretly that you have moved each alphabet by 2 places only he can decode the message and others might not be able to. However this is a very simple example. Encryption follows this principle but is much more complicated.

Got it. Thanks a lot. So before this the messages that were going over internet were readable by anyone?

Nope. That is not what I said. This is just the message part. The message goes to the sender via a path/tunnel to put it simply. That tunnel is again secured. But if someone was able to break into that tunnel, then he might have been able to read messages. But now he will not be able to..
